Shooting video can be hard… Like really hard. Learning new equipment can be even harder. Everyone at Wonder Boy were hard core Canon homers. Like a reliable grandfather, our Canon cameras were always there for us. We always knew that we could get the shot but like many relationships in their adolescent stages… the grass can seem greener on the other side. We fell in love with Sony. With all the high frame rates, wide dynamic range, small form factor… we could go on and on. However, there is always that one thing, and with Sony it is the color science. It is extremely hard to get those rich, buttery smooth skin tones that Canon so effortlessly and freely gives straight out of the camera.
We started by shooting in a standard color profile and trying to correct and grade that footage in post but we couldn’t quite get what we wanted. We did a ton of research and experimenting and have finally achieved some really great results. We have begun shooting our footage in Picture Profile 8, making sure that the Gamma is set to Cine4 and the Color Mode is set to S-Gamut3.Cine (Thanks Matt Johnson!). The dynamic range that this profile offers is amazing. We are still learning but check out the video to see the results we are able to achieve.
